How to read an EnergyGuide label

The yellow label is most useful when you separate three things: estimated annual energy use, the label's estimated annual cost, and the cost range for similar models. Only annual kWh can be cleanly recalculated with your household's electricity rate.

Find the label's estimated yearly electricity use in kWh and multiply it by your own variable electricity rate. Treat the printed yearly cost as a standardized shopping estimate. Use the comparison range only against the similar products identified on that label; it is not a forecast of your bill or a ranking of every appliance in the store.

The entries below describe a fictional practice label, not a real product. The annual-use value is supplied only for the worked calculation; no current product cost or comparison range is being represented.

“EXAMPLE-500” and 500 kWh/year are fictional teaching inputs. They do not describe a typical refrigerator, a current model, or a current federal estimate.

Annual electricity use

kWh/year is the transferable input

Annual kWh expresses an amount of electricity rather than a price. That makes it the cleanest label value to combine with your rate, compare across otherwise similar models, and enter into a household cost calculation.

Estimated yearly cost

The printed dollars are not your quoted bill

The dollar estimate is built from the assumptions stated on the label. Your rate and use can differ, so do not copy that dollar figure into a field that asks for annual kWh or assume it is what the appliance will cost in your home.

Comparison range

The range is meaningful only inside its stated group

A model's position in the range helps compare it with the similar models described on the label. The endpoints are not universal best-and-worst appliance costs, and a low position does not guarantee a particular household result.

Model characteristics

Compare like size, type, and configuration

Read the label's model description before comparing two annual-kWh values. A product with different capacity, configuration, or features may serve a different need, so a lower number alone does not make the two products interchangeable.

Recalculate 500 kWh/year at 21.4¢ per kWh

This example combines the fictional 500 kWh annual-use figure above with a fictional household rate of 21.4¢/kWh. Neither number is presented as typical or current.

Use the annual result for an appliance comparison

Enter the old and replacement models' annual kWh with the same household rate. Then add the real purchase-price difference and ownership period so a lower electricity cost is not mistaken for an immediate financial saving.

Check that the comparison answers the same household need

Use a like-model checklist

  • Confirm the exact manufacturer and model number.
  • Compare the product type and configuration named on each label.
  • Check whether capacity and important features serve the same need.
  • Use annual kWh under comparable household-use assumptions.
  • Apply the same local electricity rate to both models.

Know what the label cannot settle

Energy use is only one part of a purchase. The label does not turn unlike products into equivalents or account for your purchase price, installation, repair risk, remaining useful life, fit, capacity needs, or every change in household use.

Those factors belong beside the energy calculation when deciding whether to replace an appliance that still works.

From label to decision

Gather the three inputs the calculator needs

  1. Copy annual kWh from each exact model's label rather than copying the printed annual cost.
  2. Find a household rate that reflects the electricity charge affected by added or reduced use. If your bill is tiered or time-based, read which electricity rate to use for appliance savings.
  3. Use each model's all-in purchase price, including costs such as delivery and installation.
  4. Choose whether you are replacing a working appliance or comparing two models you might buy anyway. When replacement is already necessary, compare whether the efficient appliance’s price premium is worth paying.
